Uncover the causes of atopic dermatitis itching and then discover its inhibitors

Professor Kenji Izuhara, Associate Dean of Saga University Faculty of Medicine, Division of Medical Biochemistry, Depertment of Biomolecular Sciences, published his research results on January 10, 2023, on the elucidation of the cause of pruritus in atopic dermatitis and the discovery of its inhibitors.
Professor Izuhara and colleagues found that periostin produced in the skin tissue of patients with atopic dermatitis act on sensory nerves and cause itching, and that their inhibitors significantly ameliorate itching. These findings were derived using FADS mice* developed at the Toyama University.
The future development of a periostin inhibitor (CP4715) as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of pruritus in atopic dermatitis will be a boon to patients suffering from itchy atopic dermatitis.
