IASIR 2026 Launches for the First Time in Kumejima, — Bringing Together Leading Researchers from Around the World to Address Sustainability in Island Communities —

Saga University’s Institute of Ocean Energy (IOES) is pleased to announce the successful convening of the “1st International Academic Summit on the GX Model in Island Regions (IASIR),” held in Kumejima, Okinawa, from March 26 to 27, 2026.

The event attracted strong participation from academic researchers, international organizations, government bodies, and industry experts from Japan and abroad, marking a significant milestone for the advancement of sustainable development in island regions.

The summit was organized with the objective of promoting the development and global deployment of a Green Transformation (GX) model tailored to island communities, addressing cross‑cutting global challenges such as energy security, water and food systems, and climate change. Approximately 20 countries were represented among the speakers.

Distinguished contributors included researchers and government officials from island nations such as Fiji, as well as senior representatives from international institutions including the United Nations University, who engaged in substantive discussions on the unique vulnerabilities and opportunities faced by island regions.

Key Highlights of the Summit
• Shared perspectives on establishing an international framework for GX models in island regions

Participants emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to advance sustainable energy systems, decarbonization, water resource management, food production, and climate resilience.
• Strengthened international networks for integrating research, policy, and on‑the‑ground implementation

The summit facilitated new avenues for cooperation among academia, policymakers, and technology developers, fostering closer alignment between research outcomes and real‑world application.
• Momentum toward joint research to promote GX solutions tailored to island-specific contexts

Multiple proposals emerged for demonstration projects and collaborative research initiatives suited to island regions that are particularly vulnerable to climate change.

The event was conducted in a hybrid format, combining on-site participation with online access. The venue was equipped with simultaneous interpretation in Japanese and English, enabling inclusive, interactive dialogue among international attendees.

Through the joint declaration adopted at IASIR, the summit established a critical foundation for future international collaborative research and policy development. IOES will continue to strengthen global partnerships and advance the practical implementation of research outcomes to contribute to a sustainable future for island regions worldwide.
