　9月22日から24日にかけて、駐日バハマ大使（本国常駐）のセドリック・スコット閣下が、沖縄県久米島町にある、本学の海洋エネルギー研究所（IOES）久米島サテライトを視察されました。同研究所の概要について説明を受けるとともに、同施設で取水した海洋深層水を利用した農業・水産業・製造業の施設等を見学されました。

　同研究所は、海洋エネルギーに関する研究教育及び科学技術を戦略的に推進する国際的な先導的中核研究拠点として、21世紀の地球規模でのエネルギー問題と環境問題の解決に寄与することを目的としている施設です。久米島サテライトは、沖縄県海洋深層水研究所敷地内に設置されており、海洋温度差発電(OTEC)エネルギーの複合利用として、海水淡水化の研究を中心に行っています。

　昨年10月、同国のアルフレッド・シールズ公共事業大臣一行が、本学の同施設の視察や兒玉学長を表敬訪問いただいたことをきっかけに、本学とバハマ大学との大学間での学術交流の発展に向けて協定を締結する運びとなり、このたび、スコット駐日バハマ大使自らバハマ大学長の署名が入った協定書を持参され、本学へ協定書が手交されました。

　スコット駐日バハマ大使は本学の久米島サテライト視察に先立ち、桃原久米島町長を表敬訪問され、桃原町長より、久米島の紹介が行われました。久米島サテライトの視察や学術交流協定書の手交にあたっては、久米島町役場をはじめとする職員の皆様や（一社）国際海洋資源エネルギー利活用推進コンソーシアムの事務局の全面的な協力のもと実施されました。

　本学として、今後、バハマ大学との学術交流協定のもと、特に人材育成などを行っていく予定としています。

H.E. Mr. Cedric Scott, Ambassador of The Bahamas to Japan, visited the Kumejima Satellite of the Institute of Ocean Energy Saga University (IOES) in Kumejima Town, Okinawa Prefecture from September 22 to 24.

 The delegation received an overview of the institute and toured its facilities for agriculture, fisheries, and manufacturing that utilize the deep seawater taken from the facility.

The institute aims to contribute to solving global energy and environmental problems of the 21st century by conducting comprehensive and interdisciplinary research education on ocean energy, establishing a research base, and contributing to the promotion of its utilization as an international leading core research center that strategically promotes research, education, and science and technology related to ocean energy. The Kumejima Satellite is located on the premises of the Okinawa Prefecture Deep Ocean Water Research Institute, and focuses on research on seawater desalination as a based to use of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) energy.

In October of last year, Hon Mr. Minister Alfred Sears, Minister of Works and Utilities of the Bahamas, and his delegation visited IOES’ facilities and paid a courtesy call on President Kodama. This visit marked the beginning of academic exchange between Saga and the University of The Bahamas for the development of Partnership and Collaboration between the two universities, and Ambassador Scott, brought an academic exchange agreement signed by the President of the University of The Bahamas and handed over the agreement to Saga University.

Prior to the visit to the Kumejima Satellite, Ambassador Scott paid a courtesy call on Mayor Tobaru of Kumejima Town, who gave a brief introduction of Kumejima. The visit to the Kumejima Satellite and the handover ceremony of a memorandum of understanding for Partnership and Collaboration were conducted with the full cooperation of the Kumejima Town Hall and other officials, as well as the secretariat of the Global Ocean reSource and Energy Association Institute (GOSEA).

Saga University plans to conduct human resource development by the agreement with the University of the Bahamas.
