国立大学法人佐賀大学

佐賀大学で学ぶために，国内を含む世界の５か国からいらっしゃった７名の入学生のみなさん，ようこそ佐賀大学にいらっしゃいました。佐賀大学の副学長をはじめ，研究科長，教職員，そして学生たちとともに，みなさんお一人お一人を心から歓迎いたします。

I would like to give a hearty welcome to each of the seven (7) students representing five (5) countries, including Japan, who have come to study at Saga University, along with the Vice President, the deans of the graduate school, faculty and students of Saga University.

きょう，ここにいらっしゃるみなさんは，佐賀大学の学生になるために，大勢の学生の中から選ばれてきました。留学生のみなさんは，まず，母国の大学で選ばれ，それから佐賀大学で選ばれました。ですから，みなさんは佐賀大学での留学に対して，高い希望と期待を持って日本に来られたことと思います。

The students present here today were selected from a large group of applicants to become students of Saga University. Regarding international students, first at their own home universities and more recently, here at Saga University. I am sure all of you have come to Japan with high hopes and expectations about studying abroad at Saga University.

佐賀大学は，学術分野における国際交流だけでなく，学生の国際交流にも力を入れています。我々の教育の目標は，世界の中で積極的な役割を果たすことのできる人材を養成することです。ですから，みなさんが佐賀大学に来てくださり，佐賀大学の国際化に貢献してくださることに対し，お礼を申し上げます。

Saga University emphasizes and encourages not only international academic exchange but also international student exchange. Our goal of education is "to educate people who can take an active role in the world ". I thank you for coming to our university and for contributing to its internationalization.

さて，旧佐賀大学と佐賀医科大学の統合により，現在の佐賀大学が誕生して今年で10年になります。今月には統合10周年を記念して正門整備に併せ建設を進めてきた佐賀大学美術館が開館しました。美術館では佐賀大学の歴史の一部を見ることができますし，カフェレストランも併設していますので，ぜひ一度足を運んでみてください。

You may not know this but Saga University as you see it now is only 10 years old. The institution is much older but 10 years ago we integrated the former Saga University with the Saga Medical School. To commemorate this we inaugurated Saga University Art Museum along with the new main entrance to the university for our 10th anniversary this month. You can learn much more about the history of Saga University and also enjoy coffee and lunch at the nice cafe restaurant there, so please visit it.

医学部附属病院の再整備をはじめ，大規模なキャンパス整備も着々と進めていますので，みなさんのキャンパスライフがますます充実したものになることを期待しています。

As you can see on the campus here we also have more projects such as the large-scale improvement of the campus and the redevelopment of Saga University Hospital. It is my sincerest wish that from these redevelopments and improvements that your campus life will be more fruitful.

どうか，佐賀大学にいらっしゃる間に，まわりの学生とたくさん友達になり，そしてご自分の専門分野の先生方と知り合ってください。また，大学の外に出て行って，地元の人々ともぜひ交流してください。佐賀では，年間を通して多くのイベントがあります。それらのイベントに参加することによって，日本の文化や社会や自然について知ることができるでしょう。それにより，大学生活から得られるものが一層豊かになることでしょう。

While you are here, please take the opportunity to make friends with other students at the university and become acquainted with the professors in your respective fields of study. I also encourage each of you to get to know local people outside the university. There are many events throughout the year here in Saga. Attending these will be a good opportunity for you to get to know the culture, society, and nature of Japan and further enhance the rewards of your life at Saga University.

最後になりましたが，みなさんの佐賀での滞在が，学問の上で意味深いものとなり，将来のキャリアにつながることを願っています。みなさんのご多幸をお祈りいたします。

Let me conclude by saying I hope your stay in Saga will be academically meaningful and will advance each of you in your future career. I wish all of you the best of luck.
